Chantelle Rose Biography

Chantelle Rose, 2008 Scott Crossfield Aerospace Teacher of the Year and longtime Civil Air Patrol Aerospace Education Member knows what it takes to turn students on to "The Right Stuff". "Learning is a passion and we must provide our students with every opportunity to LOVE what they learn", says Chantelle. After participating in a 2001 SOAR workshop at the National Museum of the United States Air Force, Chantelle became an active member of the CAP Aerospace Education program. Her students have earned the Excellence in Aerospace Excellence Award every year since 2002. That is not a difficult task considering her juniors and seniors spend 18 weeks with aviation and aerospace topics.

"Earth, Wind & Fire" a course aligned with Ohio state Science and Technology standards was originally written by Mrs. Rose for students at Graham High School. This past summer, she transformed her curricula into an on-line course to be delivered to students statewide by TRECA Digital Academy. The course begins with the students constructing scale timelines of the history of flight. Then, they make history by choosing a historical aviator to research and "become" in a third person presentation to be "performed" in front of the class. The activity begins with a visit from Harriett Quimby - Mrs. Rose dressed in a purple satin flying suit patterned after the costume on display at the International Women's Air & Space Museum!

Once students have a grasp on the history of flight, they begin building their way through history. Hot air balloons, kites, gliders, powered balsa airplanes, and rockets fill the air in the classroom, gymnasium and football field. Students experience first hand the forces of flight, Newton's Law's of Motion and many other science principles. They study the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs, learn about the space shuttle and explore the next generation space vehicle. The favorite activity for the year is a NASA Engineering Design Challenge on Thermal Protection Systems. Students work in teams to design, build and test heat shields for model spacecrafts. What high school students wouldn’t want to use a propane torch to test a TPS they created!

Under the guidance of Mrs. Rose, students from Graham High School have launched an experiment onboard a sounding rocket from NASAWallops Flight Facility, competed in an International Remote Operated Vehicles Competition at NASA Johnson Space Center, met Homer Hickam and launched rockets from the "real Cape Coalwood" and presented their results from Engineering Design Challenges at the National Earth to Orbit Symposium at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. These students are learning first hand what it takes to "make it" in the world of science, technology, engineering and math through authentic, real world experiences. These activities provide students opportunities to really LOVE learning and develop "the Right Stuff" for their future careers!

Chantelle Rose of St. Paris, Ohio is the Graham High School Science Department Lead Teacher.
